The Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education®
Movement begins -- and changes -- in the brain. Feldenkrais® is learning designed to help you use what you've got.
It is not "exercise," unless you consider using your brain "exercise"!
The use of movement plus your attention creates awareness of your movement patterns. A habit depends on an established movement sequence. It may or may not include efficient or coordinated actions.
Change occurs when you become aware of your current patterns and interrupt them. Slow movements made with awareness allow you to interrupt the automatic sequence. Using (activating) the habit will not remove it. Change is only possible by deliberately making a new choice. Feldenkrais helps you find the moment you can exercise choice.
The Feldenkrais Method® enhances your ability to coordinate your movement through the nervous system and the skeleton. Brain + body are synergistically involved using awareness to discriminate between intended and unnecessary movement. Feldenkrais® teaches educated self-use.
Over 1000 lessons were created by Dr. Feldenkrais. Titled Awareness Through Movement In English (published 1967 - available on Amazon) the title could be translated from the Hebrew: Understanding While Doing, Doing to Understand. This captures the intention of the lessons.
